For most international travelers, the current SDF is US$100 per adult per night, while the one-time Bhutan visa application fee is US$40. The SDF is separate from the cost of your accommodation, transportation, meals and other travel services.

Bhutan's entry system has also changed in recent years. Travelers can now apply for a visa online themselves, or have a tour operator or hotel submit the application on their behalf. What Is the Sustainable Development Fee?

The Sustainable Development Fee, commonly called the SDF, is a daily levy collected by the Government of Bhutan from visitors.

The fee supports national programs including healthcare, education and training, environmental conservation, cultural preservation, infrastructure and initiatives that support local communities and businesses. Bhutan's Department of Tourism also describes the SDF as part of the country's wider approach to sustainable tourism.

For most international adults, the current SDF is US$100 per person per night. This is a government fee rather than a payment to a tour operator.

The current discounted rate was introduced in September 2023 and is scheduled to remain in effect until 31 August 2027, subject to government review.

How Much Is the Bhutan SDF in 2026?

For most international visitors in 2026:

• Adults: US$100 per person per night
• Children aged 6 to under 12: US$50 per person per night
• Children under 6: No SDF

Indian nationals have a separate SDF rate of Nu. 1,200 per person per night, with separate child rates. Bangladesh and the Maldives also have specific arrangements that differ from the standard international visitor rules.

How the SDF Is Calculated

The SDF is calculated according to the number of nights you spend in Bhutan.

For example, an adult staying for:

• 3 nights: US$300 SDF
• 5 nights: US$500 SDF
• 7 nights: US$700 SDF

How to Apply for a Bhutan Visa

Applying for a Bhutan visa is now a relatively straightforward online process.

You can apply directly through Bhutan's official visa system, or a tour operator or hotel can submit the application on your behalf.

Step 1: Prepare Your Information

The official Bhutan visa application requires information such as:

• A digital copy of your valid passport
• A recent digital passport photograph
• Your arrival and departure dates
• Payment details

Your passport should meet the current Bhutan entry requirements before you submit the application.

You will also be asked to agree to Bhutan's visitor pledge and provide the information required for your trip.

The current one-time visa application fee is US$40.

Step 4: Wait for Processing

A correctly completed visa application can take up to five working days to process, according to Bhutan's Department of Tourism. We recommend applying well before your departure date so there is enough time to resolve any issues if additional information is required.

Can You Apply for a Bhutan Visa Yourself?

Yes.

This is an important change from Bhutan's older tourism system. Travelers can now apply directly through the official online visa system. You do not have to book your entire trip through a tour operator simply to obtain a visa.

You can also choose to work with a tour operator or hotel, which can submit the visa application on your behalf.

Even though a tour operator is not mandatory for ordinary travel, a local guide is mandatory while traveling in Bhutan, and trekking must be undertaken with an accredited tour operator or guide.

Do You Need a Guide in Bhutan?

Yes.

Bhutan's current tourism rules require visitors to be accompanied by a certified local guide while traveling around the country. Route permits are no longer required for ordinary travel when visitors are accompanied by a Department of Tourism certified guide.

For trekking, an accredited tour operator or guide is required to organize and conduct the trek.

Is Travel Insurance Required for Bhutan?

Travel insurance is not currently mandatory for entry into Bhutan.
